The 2nd Annual Great Northern Hills Tour
 and
Dog Burning
May 22, 2004 around 9:00 a.m.

Everyone's invited to come ride (at your own risk, of course!) the hills to the north on nice quiet country roads on Saturday, May 22 from Jim and Kahne's place at Lake Hawkins. We plan to have two major routes this year. This is an Arkansas-type group ride and not a race. If it gets strung out, we will wait at major intersections for riders to catch up and re-group.

The "Hell of the North" route will be about 45 miles with 15 miles being on fairly smooth oil top. It begins on one of the lowest points in Wood County and ascends the "Great Nothern Beast" to the highest point in Upshur County 24 miles away. This year's route will have even more hills. We discovered "The Three Sisters" since last year and have added them to the long route. We plan to have one rest stop at the top of the "Great Nothern Beast." There are several places where you can bail out and head back to the house.

The "Heck of the North" route is much tammer with few hills and will be about 22 miles. And, if you don't want to ride that far, you can ride around the lake (11 miles) on your road or MTB. If you don't want to ride at all, then you can wait for everyone to get back to eat afterwards. BYOB, Bring Your Own Bike (or beverage, at your own risk, of course!). We will grill some dogs.

Check back here for updates or a cancellation due to weather.

Map to house
Two easy ways to get here:

Take HW 80 west out of Hawkins or east from Mineola, north on 2869, east on 3470 at Fouke to the corner of 3470 and 3476.

Another way from Hawkins is to turn in before you get to 2869 on CR 3440, which goes by the park, and follow the lake road around to 3469 then right on 3470 to first house on right. You can also keep going around the lake and take 3470 and take a left to the first house on the left.
