Like those clean swept shoulders on Hwy. 69 South? They were again recently cleaned by our TexDOT friends, even before being asked by TBC. Thank the Tyler District Maintenance Department and TexDOT Engineer, Dale Booth, P.E. Dale also keeps the Districts Cycling Route Map up to date (using cyclists input) so that the highway maintenance programs can tailored to keep cyclist needs in mind while planning maintenance and construction improvements for our fine infrastructure of roads and highways. |

![]() PREZZ SEZZ by Eric Williams Galén has gone to visit her mother in Florida and has asked me to thank all of the volunteers, not only Kahne's kids (Hey, Kahne's Kids has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?). Thanks to YWAM for RS#1 and all of the flaggers and especially for Ken's Off-Road stunt driving exhibition in the YWAM van. Thanks to Honey-B-Ham for RS#7 (Sandy Beach) and Miss Margarete's San Francisco Pie and the cookies for the rider goody bags. Thanks to Draft Master Primo and the Bullard Volunteer Fire Department for RS#6 and the great pictures (if Big Mel ever posts them). RS#5. Thanks to the Emerald Bay Cloggers especially by the racers for passing out water at the top of the Beast 2. Thanks to Rachel & Bill Wilson and the Federal District Court, Tyler Division for RS#4 (Mixon) Thanks to Mr. Roper for letting us use his yard as the perfect rest stop location. Thank you Tyler Christian Fellowship Youth Group for hosting the start/finish area and helping out for the entire day. Last, but not least, thank you Sharon Morris and the On The Border crew for the great Troup RS#3. If you go out to eat, please visit Honey-B-Ham and On The Border and tell them how much you appreciate their contribution in making this a very successful B&B. We couldn't do it without our volunteers. If you know any of these people, please thank them for the outstanding job they did for B&B this year and also for all of cycling in the state of Texas. We had the support of the Smith County Sheriff's department, Tyler PD, and the Constable's Office of Precinct 2. Tyler Simpson of Simpson Adventure Sports and Kevin Lagere of Richardson Bike Mart provided mechanical service before and during the tour, so be sure to thank them for the great support. The next time that you are in Tanner Bikes be sure to thank Greg for the wonderful job that he did with the Kids Race. He gave away 4 high quality bicycles to 4 happy kids and their parents. We can't thank him enough. Thanks to Bob and Charlotte Sanford and all the crew from the Tyler Amateur Radio Club. I think that they might as well do away with that "Amateur" stuff. What a highly professional job by all. In East Texas we are fortunate to have the best. My truck drivers were in constant awe of the fact that you guys and gals were aware of everyone and everything that was happening. Thanks so much from the volunteers of the B&B as well as rest stop captains and the riders that never were aware of how lucky they were to have you all there. Roger
Congratulations to Raymon Parker . for a second place finish at Waco this past weekend. He races in a very tough division with the best young racers in Texas. Ray had some bad luck at the Bar-H race last month with two flats, but he finished anyway, riding most of the last lap on a flat. It would have been real easy for him to quit as that course is tough with air in your tires. I was standing beside his very proud father when Ray finished that race and I knew he had what it takes to excel in racing and probably any other endeavor. Way to go Ray. ...Bob Hebb I've ridden the B&B the last 3 years and I believe it just gets better and better. Being fatter and older than last year , I decided to only do the 44 miles (actually my legs and breathing decided for me). The turns had been swept and flagmen were at any point where you could possibly go wrong. I particularly liked the change in route that was a result of a collapsed culvert. The road we took had a wide verge and was pretty smooth. It only added about 3 miles since my odometer showed 44.27 miles. We should keep that change in future B&B's. The organization and friendliness of all the support staff was noticed my a number of "out of towners" as they commented on what a pleasant experience the whole morning was, including a real sit-down lunch in air-conditioning. Not even the Ride of the Roses with Lance Armstrong has either of those plus the countryside here in east-Texas is much prettier and more challenging. This ride will continue to grow, I'm betting on 750-900 riders next year. If I'm able, I'll be one of them with the rest of the Wal-Mart Greeters. Thanks again for a great day. ...Dick Wright Here is a summary of the Wednesday (4/10/02) night fast training ride in San Antonio, thought you might want to use it in the newsletter. Pretty funny. Glad I don't do this ride. The author is unknown, the source is from the Texas Bicycle Racing Website. ...Later, David The pace got really fast as 40-50 riders showed up in a howling crosswind. The first attack came as Dave ran a stoplight to get a gap, and between cars, Chuck, Topper, and two guys wearing Britton's jerseys crossed the intersection and bridged up. We were flying down the state highway, guttering people into the oncoming lane. Just as a delivery truck had to swerve off of into the ditch to avoid a Cat 1 on aero bars, Billy, Rod, and C.P. attacked hard on the right, almost hitting a car backing out of a driveway. With about 10k to go, at the sprint spot just before the elementary school crosswalk, Rick wound it up to 32mph, and held off the charging field while dodging a couple of kids from a soccer team crossing the street. A counter-attack near the daycare center caused 2 echelons to form into three lanes of traffic. Since there are no real rules to this ride, and no one has the sense to control it, these echelons merged after blowing two stop signs. In the final sprint, Topper, who hasn't raced since winning the MS150 (largest pledge raiser) wound up the sprint and held everybody off to the entrance to Wal-Mart. Somebody behind caused a 3-car pileup, so expect a lawsuit to follow from some angry motorists, and the Texas Farm Bureau to try to bring up the bike-ban legislation again. Oh well, "results" will be posted on wildbikeracing.com
Is everyone getting faster or am I just getting slower? Holy Schwinn Batman, we have some monsters out on the roads. Somehow, a lot of our members got better during the winter. How did they do that? Jim Lindsey lost about 30 pounds and gained 5 miles an hour. I could hardly recognize him at a recent Sunday ride. It is sometimes hard to tell who people are when all you see is their butt and its rapidly moving away from you. Ben Branstetter was a pretty good young rider last year. What did you feed him during the winter Rob? Keep it up and youll have French reporters going through your trash. Galen Williams and Frances Singleton rode mountain bikes this winter. They are absolutely hammering the hills now. Frances has a fast, new road bike. I hate to see her riding alone but Roger must feel its best to follow from a distance. Cathy Cockrell and Sharon Morris are riding 100K tours and Im sure a 100 miler is in the future. If Kahne Parsons continues to improve, she will soon be dropping Jim. (a little pun intended) A lot of our old hands (legs) are as strong as ever. Eric Williams can ride as fast as he wants to. David Starrett is very fit and I dont know a stronger rider. I wont mention Super Dave Williams and Jim Exum. They are not mortals. Our racers are doing well. Andy Kathan won his last race at Waco and is near the top of his TMBRA division. Raymon Parker is racing well in TMBRA and took third in the Beauty and the Beast race. Not too bad for a 17 year old high school kid against some pretty good and experienced racers. Well, Im going to find my water bottles and sneak over to Super Daves backyard. Someone said he has a fountain he drinks from back there. If you see me out on the roads, someone, anyone, please slow down and let |
