JOHN COBB SPEAKS TO TYLER BICYCLE CLUB

If  the first club meeting of the year sets the standard for 2004, you won’t want to miss one meeting!!  John Cobb spoke to us for about an hour and no one lost interest at any time.

John first starting riding while living in Shreveport about twenty years ago, and very soon heard about the Shreveport Bike Club.  He went to ride with them, and told us that when he saw they were all dressed in those little black  spandex shorts, he thought, “What’s up with this stuff?”  All their shoes made funny clicking noises when they walked, too, but he didn’t think too much about that.  After all, he had on his coolest pair of blue jean cut-off pants and a nice pair of tennis shoes.  They were so nice to him.  They allowed him to lead the whole bunch for a long time.  Then they got to what seemed to be a tall hill and took off and left him wondering where that hill came from.  Later he discovered it was an overpass over the Clyde Fant Parkway!  I guess we all start off learning lessons the hard way.

John started using the wind tunnel at A&M testing new designs on race cars and racing-style go-karts.  A friend asked him to help with a new innovation that turned out to be aero bars.  They persuaded Greg Lemond to come down and try them out.  After about a week of trials and learning how to use them, Greg took them with him to Europe for the season.  Later that year, using the aero bars for the first time, he beat Laurent Fignon in the final stage of the Tour during the now famous last day individual time trial when he bettered Fignon’s time by thirty-eight seconds to win with an eight second margin.

Later, another of John’s friends sent a young rider named Lance Armstrong down to A&M to be the riding model for design changes on the Quintana Roo bicycle line.  Lance knew John was working with Greg and wanted to meet him, so John worked with them both.

John talked to us about training on stationary trainers and/or spin class through the use of heart monitors to improve strength and cardio fitness.  He said to go to spin class or use an indoor trainer without using the monitor was pretty close to a waste of time, unless you’re just trying to build “butt time.”

He talked about why spinning at a higher cadence is so important.  It’s because the muscles don’t have to fire as long or hard on each revolution and therefore don’t build as much lactic acid. He went on to say the first time or two or three you try to spin faster, using the same gear as you normally do for that stretch of road, you’re going to see your buddies ride away and leave you, but that gradually, you’ll see the improvement.  It takes time!  Lance took three years to add an additional eight revolutions to his average pedal cadence!  Maybe each of us can add two or three by year’s end, hunh?

See you in February at the meeting.  Robin Stallings, Executive Director for Texas Bicycle Coalition is the scheduled speaker.  February 5.

Blue Dog Days Have Arrived

You’ve lost that lovin’ feelin’.  That sleek, titanium-and-carbon goddess you caressed so often during those lazy, hazy days of summer now stands gathering dust in the garage.  You, in the meantime, sit on the sofa, munching cheese puffs, watching football, and getting flabby.

SAY NO MORE!  Spike “Blue Dog” is here to get your flabby buns back on that hideously expensive Italian saddle and RIDE!  Starting this January, and likely to be repeated in February, “roadies” now have a little extra incentive to start laying in those base miles.

The Blue Dog Road Show, a scheme hatched by some bored “roadies” on the Tyler Bicycle Club Forum during December, is designed to give “roadies” some extra incentive to get off their trainers or skip spin class, brave the chill winter winds and log some road miles.  Those with computers can go to the TBC web site (www.tylerbicycleclub.com) and click on “Read More” by the photo of Blue Spike.  That will take you to a page where you can create a Blue Dog Log.  Then, whenever you come in from a road ride, just return to this page, click on “Add to Log,” and total your road miles thus far.  There is a commentary section that allows you to keep tabs on the coldest temps you’ve ridden or anything else worth mentioning.  If you don’t have a computer, send a copy of your January log to the newsletter, or give it to a club officer at the February meeting.  All reporting is on the honors system (so don’t cheat!).

At press time, Gary Lesniewski (is anyone surprised??) is leading the mileage total with over 300 miles and closing fast.  There are 20 riders signed in thus far.

The basis for any awards has yet to be determined, but there will be something down the road—possibly at a special gathering in March, when we hand out the Gnarly Dog Awards.  (That date/place is also pending.)

PREZ SEZ

The January meeting was GREAT and so was the turn out.  Almost 50 folks showed up to hear John Cobb speak.

GET OUT YOUR BIKE AND RIDE!

The February meeting is to be just as great.  Robin Stallings from Austin, Texas will bring us up to date on what the Texas Bicycle Coalition is doing for us in Austin with the politicians and what we can do locally.  Gayle Spann, the Chairman of the Executive Board of the Texas Bicycle Coalition will also be with him at our meeting here in Tyler.  Robin has agreed to meet with TxDOT and related parties while in Tyler.  He also agreed to meet with representatives from the Tyler Chamber of Commerce, Tyler Visitor and Convention Bureau, and possibly Dr. Howard Patterson or his representative, too.

GET OUT YOUR BIKE AND RIDE!

Our March speaker is to be Dr. Howard Patterson from U.T.Tyler.  He was in Wichita Falls when they started the Hotter ‘N Hell 100 ride and is interested in working with us to get something going around the Beauty and the Beast in that vein.

GET OUT YOUR BIKE AND RIDE!

Maybe subliminal messaging really works, or maybe it doesn’t, but don’t “veg” out just because the daylight hours are shorter.  Find a way and RIDE!

CHARITY RIDES AND RACES

GNARLY DOG TIME TRIAL

The Gnarly Dog Time Trials continue through February, with a possible rain date in March.  If you haven’t ridden yet, there’s still time to come catch the action!  It’s only $5 to ride, and riders of all skill levels are welcome.  The Time Trials are held on specified Sunday afternoons at Tyler State Park at 2 p.m.

We’ve had a good series thus far.  Steve Kidd, Martin Piskozub, and Jeff Nixon have all turned in some super-fast times.  Andy Kathan was showin’ ‘em how it’s done by a Jedi Master, though a nasty endo during training has temporarily put a crimp in Master Kathan’s progress.  There’s still plenty of room in the Beginner category for men and women—for women in any category, for that matter.

Tanner's will be having a Demo Day and cookout starting at 11:00 A.M. the same day as the January 25 Time Trial.

     Come Ride!!

The Longview Bicycle Club will be hosting their annual Freeze Your Fanny Ride to benefit East Texas Lightnin’ on February 7th.  Distances are 10, 26, 43, and 56 miles. There will be rest stops with fruit, home made cookies, and water.  Cost per rider is $23.

You can register ahead of time by going to the ride web site, http://www.bicycletexas.com/fyf.htm.  You can pick up your registration packet Friday night between 6 and 8 p.m. at Wooley G’s Bike and Fitness , 4344 N. Hwy. 259, or on ride day between 8 and 10 a.m. at the Doris McQueen Primary School, 6000 Airline Road.  The ride will start at 10:30 a.m.

U. S. Postal Team Changes

There have been some interesting changes for the U. S. Postal-Berry Floor team for the coming season.  Roberto Heras, winner of the 2003 Vuelta a España, has departed to become team leader for the new team, Liberty Seguros, where he will be joined by former Postie Christian Vendevelde.  Replacing Heras in the USPS lineup will be Portuguese rider Jose Luis Azevedo.

Other new riders for USPS are former junior world time trial champion Jurgen Ven der Broeck, current mountain bike star Ryder Hesjedal, Michael Creed, Stijin Devolder, Patrick McCarty, Benjamin Noval, and Daniel Rincon.  They will join team leader Lance Armstrong, Manuel Beltran, Viatcheslav Ekimov, George Hincapie, Floyd Landis, Pavel Padrnos, Victor Hugo Peña, and Jose Luis Rubiera.
